Defence of an HDR by Frédéric Normand

On 1 April 2014 in Montpellier, Frédéric Normand defended his accreditation to supervise theses (HDR) entitled: “Floraison et phénologie des arbres fruitiers tropicaux. Une recherche appliquée à l’agronomie”. (Flowering and phenology of tropical fruit trees. Research applied to agronomy).

Frédéric Normand, an agronomist by training, has undertaken research on various tropical fruit species during his assignments overseas (Cameroon and Reunion). After 10 years devoted to research-development projects with work primarily on lychee, citrus and strawberry guava, then the defence of a PhD in agronomy in 2002,  he resumed and developed a research programme on mango. His research subject is yield build-up, centred on two agronomic problems of tropical fruit crops: irregular production and phenological asynchronism. By developing a network for scientific collaboration, he has been able to undertake work to seek the determinants of flowering, considering trophic and architectural aspects, in interaction with environmental factors. The results lie at the heart of a mango crop model that is currently being developed, with plans ultimately to link it to pest and disease models.
