Defence of an HDR (accreditation to supervise theses) by Thibaud Martin entitled "Protection intégrée des cultures cotonnières et horticoles In Afrique Sub-Saharienne : de l'agrochimie à l'agroécologie". (IPM of cotton and horticultural crops in sub-Saharan Africa: from agrochemistry to agroecology)

Thibaud Martin, originally a chemical engineer by training, acquired his agricultural entomologist skills once recruited by CIRAD, in different places (1989-1994: cotton research station in Chad; 1994-2000: cotton programme at the National Agricultural Research Centre in Bouaké, Ivory Coast; 2012 to date: ICIPE Plant Health Department, Nairobi, Kenya). His research topics have focused first and foremost on the optimum management of pesticides over the long term in West Africa (i.e., taking into account probabilities of the development of resistance in the target species). His research has concentrated on the resistance to insecticides developed by the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera and the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (characterization of resistance, identification of the molecular mechanism(s) involved, assessment of strategies able to counter such resistance). For some years, Thibaud Martin has been broadening his collaboration networks and study models to investigate the impact of pesticides on human health and the environment, but also ways of limiting pesticide use for controlling pest insects and/or pathogen vectors.
